Ange-Marie Hancock’s Solidarity Politics for Millennials is a wonderful contribution to the scholarly books about politics for the new upcoming generation of 20 to 30 year olds. Given the broad range of ages involved in American politics today, there is a distinct role for cross-generational discussions. The Millennials have to make an attempt to understand these discussions and join in the fight.

Hancock argues that there is a cultural generation gap between the Baby Boomers and the Millennials. This book tries to fulfill the positive potential of the current generation gap in American politics. Read full article…

Song of the Day: ‘Day After Tomorrow,’ Linda Thompson

I liked “Day After Tomorrow” when the Tom Waits-written song came out on his 2004 album, “Real Gone.” But I grew to love it when Linda Thompson included a live version of it on her 2007 release, “Versatile Heart.”

The song is written in the style of a letter from a solider, stationed overseas. Waits sings it in a offhand manner, as if the solider is just casually talking. But Thompson’s more artful, deliberate delivery adds heart-breaking power: you get the sense that the soldier is really speaking her mind, and trying to express what’s most important to her.

Steve Martin highlights Boston Pops 2012 schedule

The Boston Pops have revealed plans for their 2012 schedule at Symphony Hall, which will begin on May 9 and run till June 16. Highlighting the list of special guests are Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers and Bernadette Peters, while popular themed nights like Film Night and Gospel Night will return. Tickets for all of the shows are now on sale through the Symphony Hall box office and website.

Actor/Comedian turned bluegrass favorite Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers will join the Keith Lockhart-led Boston Pops Orchestra for a pair of special shows on Tuesday, May 29 and Wednesday, May 30. Billed as an Evening of Comedy and Bluegrass, the concerts will mark the first time Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers have performed with an orchestra.
