Tom Long: Movie awards season may be year of the dog

Written on January 8, 2012 – 6:31 pm | by Charlotte Zercho

At first it looked like this year’s movie awards season might be filled with monkey business, but now it looks like it may be going to the dogs.

Ever since the release of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in August, there has been not-so-idle speculation over whether Andy Serkis, the human actor who provided the movements and expressions for the computer-generated lead ape, might earn a best supporting actor Oscar nomination, even though his actual face never appears on screen.

Now more fur is flying. There’s a push — seriously — to get an Oscar nomination, or even a special Oscar, for a dog.

The dog’s name is Uggie, and he’s a terrifyingly adorable Jack Russell terrier that nearly steals the black-and-white silent film “The Artist,” which opens Dec. 23

Keira Knightley’s Dangerous Method

Written on January 1, 2012 – 5:58 pm | by Charlotte Zercho

The abiding image in David Cronenberg’s new film A Dangerous Method is of Keira Knightley, her jaw thrust out alarmingly as she howls out the dark secrets of a confused childhood to her psychiatrist: Her father spanked her, she cries, and “it excited me.” It’s an alarming performance, both for its raw power and for the painful grimaces.

“I stood in front of my mirror for a couple of days and went, ‘Hmmm, what is this, how can I f— this face up?’” Knightley recalled.

Written on January 1, 2012 – 4:43 pm | by Jaxon Hallahan

Ange-Marie Hancock’s Solidarity Politics for Millennials is a wonderful contribution to the scholarly books about politics for the new upcoming generation of 20 to 30 year olds. Given the broad range of ages involved in American politics today, there is a distinct role for cross-generational discussions. The Millennials have to make an attempt to understand these discussions and join in the fight.

Hancock argues that there is a cultural generation gap between the Baby Boomers and the Millennials. This book tries to fulfill the positive potential of the current generation gap in American politics. Read full article…

Song of the Day: ‘Day After Tomorrow,’ Linda Thompson

Written on December 31, 2011 – 5:38 am | by Cameron Hussey

I liked “Day After Tomorrow” when the Tom Waits-written song came out on his 2004 album, “Real Gone.” But I grew to love it when Linda Thompson included a live version of it on her 2007 release, “Versatile Heart.”

The song is written in the style of a letter from a solider, stationed overseas. Waits sings it in a offhand manner, as if the solider is just casually talking. But Thompson’s more artful, deliberate delivery adds heart-breaking power: you get the sense that the soldier is really speaking her mind, and trying to express what’s most important to her.
